Patriarch of the Russian Orthodox Church Kirill called for the adoption of a federal law prohibiting “inducing” women to have abortions

The head of the Russian Orthodox Church, Patriarch Kirill , said that the population of Russia can “increase simply as if by moving a magic wand” if we learn to “dissuade women from having an abortion.” To do this, he said, it is necessary to pass a federal law prohibiting inducing women to have abortions.

“Unfortunately, the number of abortions in the country remains high. Thank God, separate initiatives are appearing at the legislative level aimed at reducing the number of abortions. Not so long ago in Mordovia, for example, a law was passed banning inducement to abortion. I hope that this initiative will be supported in other regions and at the federal level,” the patriarch said, speaking at the opening of the XI Church-wide Congress on Social Ministry.

The first Russian region to introduce penalties for “inducing” women to have an abortion was Mordovia. In August, the State Assembly of the Republic of Mordovia adopted a law according to which fines from five to ten thousand rubles are introduced for citizens, from 25 to 50 thousand for officials and from 100 to 200 thousand for legal entities.

In November, a similar law appeared in the Tver region, and in the Tambov region such a bill was submitted to the regional parliament.
