The website of the Memorial project on the emergence of dictatorship in modern Russia was blocked

An “unspecified government agency” blocked in Russia the website of the Central Human Rights Center “Memorial” project “30 YEARS BEFORE” on the formation of dictatorship in post-Soviet Russia. Roskomsvoboda drew attention to the blocking.

As part of the project, human rights activists and journalists from various independent publications are trying to understand how the democracy that emerged after the collapse of the USSR returned to dictatorship, taking away civil liberties and punishing those who try to defend them.

The site was blocked “by mask” - that is, with all domains and subdomains. Many materials in one way or another relate to the war in Ukraine and other wars in Russia, and this is probably the reason for the blocking. Memorial said that they were not notified of the blocking.

  • After the outbreak of a full-scale war in Ukraine, Roskomnadzor demanded that the media write about what was happening only with reference to official Russian sources. Journalists were also prohibited from calling the “Russian special operation” an attack, invasion, or declaration of war. Otherwise, the supervisory authority threatened with blocking and fines of up to five million rubles.
