The Ministry of Justice demanded that the “international LGBT social movement” be recognized as an extremist organization. Information about this appeared on the website of the Ministry of Justice.
The Supreme Court of Russia will consider the claim for recognition as an extremist organization; the hearing is scheduled for November 30.
A press release from the Ministry of Justice clarifies that in the activities of the LGBT movement “various signs and manifestations of an extremist orientation have been identified, including the incitement of social and religious discord.”
- On December 5, 2022, Vladimir Putin signed a law that provides for a ban on “LGBTQ propaganda” on the Internet, media, literature, cinema and advertising. For violations of the law, administrative liability is provided in the form of large fines, and for foreigners and stateless persons - deportation from Russia. Films that showcase queer experiences will not receive distribution certificates. Products (including books) that are perceived to contain such “propaganda” will be prohibited from sale.
- In July 2023, Russia adopted a law banning gender reassignment. According to this law, transpeople cannot adopt children, hormone therapy and gender-affirming surgeries are prohibited, and marriages in which one of the spouses changed the gender marker in the documents will be annulled.
- The passage of the laws not only marked widespread censorship, but also increased repression of LGBTQ people and organizations that help them.
