She called the situation with Skochilenko monstrous, who was sentenced to seven years in prison on charges of spreading “fakes” about the Russian army. The reason for initiating a criminal case against her was an anti-war action, during which Skochilenko replaced price tags in one of the St. Petersburg stores with stickers with information about the war in Ukraine.

“They knew about Alexandra’s illness from the very beginning that she had food intolerance, that she also had a number of diseases, and she spoke about all this every time at the extension of the preventive measure from the very beginning,” Merkacheva recalled.

“When they chose such a harsh measure for confinement in a pre-trial detention center, it raised a lot of doubts and questions. And now, after the verdict... <...> Therefore, I believe that, in general, her stay in the colony is mortally dangerous for her. I’m not even talking about the stage - the period when a person is transferred, it can definitely last more than one day, it can last for weeks,” she added.

Another member of the Human Rights Council, Alexander Brod, promised to appeal to Ombudsman Tatyana Moskalkova with a request to provide Skochilenko with adequate food in the colony.

In turn, Merkacheva said that at the next meeting with Vladimir Putin she will invite him to support a bill prohibiting sending people with serious illnesses to pre-trial detention centers.

Earlier, doctors wrote an open letter to Vladimir Putin demanding the immediate release of Skochilenko.
