The First Court of Appeal of General Jurisdiction confirmed the sentence of 21-year-old student Gleb Verdiyan in the treason case. Previously, he was sentenced to six years in a maximum security colony. This was reported by a Mediazona correspondent from the courtroom.
In his last word, Verdiyan asked to commute the sentence, as his family needs help. “Dear court, during the period I was in the pre-trial detention center, I realized everything and am asking for a punishment not related to imprisonment due to the fact that my mother and grandmother were left completely alone and needed my help. I need to return to my family and to college. I want to be useful to my family and society. Being here, I understood everything. I apologize to the court, to my homeland and to my family,” he said.
In the appeal, his lawyer noted that Verdiyan himself did not commit any illegal actions. He was provoked by a person who had a certain account. What exactly is being discussed in the court materials is not specified, since this case was considered behind closed doors.
Verdiyan was detained in Moscow on October 28, 2022. On the same day, the court arrested him for ten days under the article of petty hooliganism. He allegedly “disturbed public order” at a bus stop near the airport. After serving his sentence, he was probably detained at the exit from the special detention center and on November 7, the Lefortovo District Court placed him in custody on charges of treason. In early September of this year, the Moscow City Court sentenced Verdiyan to six years in a maximum security colony and a fine of 200 thousand rubles. The plot of the accusation, as well as the details of this case, are unknown.
Verdiyan is one of the youngest defendants known to be accused of treason. Before the criminal case, he was a second-year student at the Faculty of Economics of the Astrakhan State University of Architecture and Civil Engineering.
