Katerly died at the age of 89. She was born in 1934, graduated from the Lensovet Technological Institute in 1958, worked as a chemical process engineer for about 15 years, and then began to engage in literary and human rights activities.

The St. Petersburg resident wrote 15 books of prose and journalism, was a member of the PEN Club and the Peerburg Human Rights Council. In 1996, she became the laureate of the PEN Club of St. Petersburg award “For civic and creative courage”, and then in 1999 - the laureate of the House of Book and PEN Club of St. Petersburg award “Honor and Freedom” in the “Publicism” category.

While engaged in human rights activities, Katerli published dozens of articles about the struggle for human rights, the threat of Nazism in Russia, as well as other social and cultural issues of our time.

Katerli is the grandmother of director Evgenia Berkovich, who is accused of justifying terrorism (Part 2 of Article 205.2 of the Criminal Code) because of the play “Finist Yasny Falcon”. When investigative measures were taking place in the criminal case, security forces also came to search Nina Katerli.

Later, Berkovich was sent to a pre-trial detention center; the court repeatedly extended her measure of restraint. On October 25, at a meeting in the Moscow City Court to approve the extension of her arrest, the director asked to be released from custody, “while none of our loved ones died,” the court refused to do this.
