The Military Court of Appeal approved sentences of 12 to 17 years in a maximum security colony to four Crimean Tatars in the case of participation in the activities of the Islamist party Hizb ut-Tahrir. Information about this was published in the court file.
The convicts were sentenced by the Southern District Military Court at the end of May 2023. Dzhebbar Bekirov was found guilty under articles of organizing the activities of a terrorist organization (Part 1 of Article 205.5 of the Criminal Code) and preparing to seize power (Article 278 of the Criminal Code with the use of Part 1 of Article 30 of the Criminal Code). He was given the longest sentence - 17 years in a maximum security colony, of which he will spend the first four years in prison .
Zavur Abdullaev, Rustem Murasov and Rustem Tairov were sentenced to 12 years in prison each on charges of participation in the activities of a terrorist organization (Part 2 of Article 205.5 of the Criminal Code) and preparation for the seizure of power. The men will also have to spend the first four years in prison before being sent to a maximum security colony. All convicts were also sentenced to a year to a year and a half of restriction of freedom after leaving the colony.
On August 17, 2021, security forces conducted mass searches in the houses of Crimean Tatars, during which five people were detained - Rustem Murasov, Rustem Tairov, Dzhebbar Bekirov, Zavur Abdullaev and Raif Fevziev. All of them were sent to a pre-trial detention center. Fevziev's case was considered separately. In January 2023, he was sentenced to 17 years in a maximum security colony. Fevziev will spend the first three years in prison, and after his release he will also face restriction of freedom - for a year and a half.

Its participants are accused and sentenced to real terms only on the basis that they met in apartments, read religious literature and recruited new participants. According to the project “Assistance to political prisoners. Memorial" as of October 12, 2023, at least 335 people are being persecuted in connection with their involvement in Hizb ut-Tahrir al-Islami, of which 25 are wanted. At least 271 people were convicted, of which 115 defendants were sentenced to terms of more than fifteen years in prison. In total, Memorial recognized as political prisoners 289 persons involved in cases of involvement in Hizb ut-Tahrir al-Islami (238 of them are currently being prosecuted, 50 of them were released after serving their sentences, and one person died).
