Former police officer Derek Chauvin, convicted of killing African-American George Floyd, was stabbed in an Arizona state prison, CNN reports, citing the office of Minnesota Attorney General Keith Ellison.
“I am saddened to hear that Derek Chauvin was a victim of violence. He was duly convicted of his crimes and, like any prisoner, he should be able to serve his sentence without fear of retaliation or violence,” Ellison said, adding that Chauvin is in stable condition.
According to the Federal Bureau of Prisons, the attack on Chauvin occurred at approximately 12:30 local time (22:30 Moscow time). Sky News TV channel writes that a former police officer was attacked by a cellmate. According to the channel's source, Chauvin was "seriously injured" as a result of the attack. “He is expected to survive,” the source added. The seriousness of the injury is also reported by The Washington Post.
At the same time, the lawyer of the former policeman, Greg Erickson, told the media that he has not yet been able to contact his client. In addition, the Federal Bureau of Prisons did not provide the lawyer with details of the incident or information about Chauvin's condition.
