A criminal case was opened against Alexei Navalny for vandalism committed by a group of people or motivated by political, ideological or other hatred or enmity (Part 2 of Article 214 of the Criminal Code). Navalny spoke about this in his letter, the text of which was published on his Telegram channel.
“Well, that is, they actually initiate a new criminal case against me every 3 months. Never before has a convict, sitting in solitary confinement for more than a year, lived such a rich social and political life,” the politician wrote.
What exactly Navalny is charged with is currently unknown. Punishment under this article implies up to three years in prison. Navalny added that letters from his wife and lawyer are not delivered to him, since they allegedly did not pass censorship.
In August, the Moscow City Court sentenced Alexei Navalny to 19 years in a general regime colony. He was found guilty under three articles of the criminal code: on the financing of extremism (Part 2 of Article 282.3 of the Criminal Code), on the creation of an extremist community (Part 3 of Article 282.1 of the Criminal Code) and on calls for extremism (Part 2 of Article 280 of the Criminal Code). Navalny was also accused of rehabilitating Nazism (Part 3 of Article 354.1 of the Criminal Code), involving minors in dangerous activities (clauses “a”, “b”, “c” of Article 151.2 of the Criminal Code), creating an NGO that infringes on the rights of citizens (Part 2 of Article 239 of the Criminal Code) and in calls for extremism (Part 1 of Article 280 of the Criminal Code), but when pronouncing the verdict, the court released Navalny from liability under these articles.
