A citizen of Belarus was detained on suspicion of committing a terrorist attack on the Baikal-Amur Mainline (BAM). This is reported by TASS with reference to the FSB Public Relations Center.

The suspected citizen of Belarus, born in 1971, was allegedly detained in the Omsk region. According to the FSB, on November 29 and 30, he blew up two trains with oil products that followed the Taishet-Tynda and Taishet-Neryungri routes along the Baikal-Amur Mainline in the Republic of Buryatia.

The terrorist attack, according to the FSB, was prepared by the Ukrainian special services. The explosions were allegedly intended to destroy critical transport and energy infrastructure in Russia.

In turn, RIA Novosti writes that the detainee confessed. He said that he acted on the instructions of a compatriot who lives in Lithuania and works for the Ukrainian special services.

“I knew the man for several years, he inspired confidence. Yes, then questions arose. And he explained that these are magnetic mines to blow up some kind of train and stop traffic on BAM,” RIA Novosti quotes the words of the detainee.

The man, according to the agency, also said that he took eight explosive devices from the cache. After that, he brought them by car to Buryatia and laid them on the tanks of freight trains.

The explosive devices went off while the train was traveling through the Severomuysky tunnel, as well as on its bypass route. As a result, containers with fuel and lubricants caught fire, and traffic was blocked for some time.

Now security forces are checking a citizen of Belarus for involvement in committing other terrorist attacks and sabotage on Russian territory. At the same time, the FSB did not specify whether the detainee had been charged.

The first reports that smoke had occurred on the Baikal-Amur Mainline appeared on November 29. Two days later, the Eastern Interregional Investigation Department for Transport recognized the incident as a terrorist attack and opened a case under the relevant article (Part 1 of Article 205 of the Criminal Code).
