On December 14, the European Court of Human Rights (ECHR) awarded compensation from 2.6 thousand to seven thousand euros to 84 Russian activists due to illegal detentions.
The decision in the case “Stalin and others v. Russia” , “Doronin and others v. Russia” , “Mezak and others v. Russia” , “Horrshr and others v. Russia” are published on the official website.
Activists were detained at protests against amendments to the Constitution and the eco-protest on September 27 in 2020, at rallies in support of politician Alexei Navalny in 2021, and at anti-war rallies in 2022.
Among them are protesters in Moscow, Pskov, Lipetsk, Voronezh, Kazan, Stavropol, Veliky Novgorod, Tyumen, St. Petersburg, Cheboksary, Bryansk, Belgorod, Krasnoyarsk, Kurgan, Tambov, Murmansk, Rostov-on-Don and Samara.
Compensation of seven thousand euros was awarded to Alexei Navalny’s associate Ivan Zhdanov for his arrests on May 25, 2018 and July 27, 2019. Several other activists were also awarded compensation for illegal detentions in 2015, 2016, 2017, 2018 and 2021.
The interests of the activists were represented by the Memorial Human Rights Center, as well as private lawyers.
The text of the news has been clarified due to the appearance of information about other decisions of the ECHR on cases against Russia dated December 14.
- On June 11, 2022, Vladimir Putin signed a law allowing the Russian government not to implement ECHR decisions taken after March 15, 2022, the day Russia was expelled from the Council of Europe. At the same time, the Court continued to consider complaints about violations by the Russian authorities that occurred before September 14, 2022. Lawyers are still turning to the ECHR with them in order to maintain contact with the Council of Europe, to which Russia may someday want to return. It also makes it possible to record violations and inform European countries about the scale of human rights violations in Russia.
