Yandex maps do not display the name of the Aegean Sea, which is located in the eastern part of the Mediterranean Sea. This was discovered by ex-journalist of Echo of Moscow Arseny Vesnin, pointing out the presence of the word “gay” in the name of the sea.
In his video it is clear that other seas and bays around retain their names. The Yandex press service told Novaya Gazeta Europe that the loss of the name of the Aegean Sea was the result of a technical error. According to them, the world map is divided into parts for ease of display, and in the Aegean Sea region there was a technical error when updating the map. They clarified that the Aegean Sea had temporarily moved to the wrong part of the map, blocking the islands.
Telegram channels also erroneously reported the island of Lesvos missing from maps in telegram channels. This is not so - as journalists clarify, it appears on maps when they are enlarged.
