The Ministry of Justice recognized 50 organizations as “undesirable” in a year

This is twice as much as in 2022

In 2023, the Ministry of Justice recognized 50 new organizations as “undesirable” in Russia, this is more than double the figure for 2022, when 23 NPOs were added to the register, Vorstka calculated.

In total, there are now 122 organizations on the department’s list (excluding branches). A third of them (40 NGOs) are engaged in political activities and support of democratic institutions, another 24 are engaged in cultural and educational activities, and 19 are religious organizations.

The fourth largest place in the register is occupied by the media and structures related to journalistic activities (14). In addition, NGOs involved in human rights and humanitarian assistance (7), environmental issues (6), anti-war initiatives (5), representing the interests of Ukrainians (3), fighting corruption (2), as well as two professional associations were considered undesirable.

The register of “undesirable organizations” has existed since 2015. For the first five years, no more than four NPOs were added to it annually, but since 2020, the rate of recognition of organizations as “undesirable” began to increase significantly. That year, 12 organizations were added to the register, in 2021 - 18, in 2022 - 23.

Legal entities included in it are prohibited from operating in Russia, and citizens who participate in their activities or finance them face criminal liability.
