Former Chairman of the Constitutional Court of Russia Marat Baglay has died

Former Chairman of the Constitutional Court (CC) of Russia, Marat Baglay, died in Moscow at the age of 92. According to the court's press service, Baglay died after a long illness.

“The departure of Marat Viktorovich is a loss for the entire legal community. He enjoyed the respect of his colleagues as a high professional, a reliable comrade, and a wise teacher,” the Constitutional Court said in a statement.

Marat Baglay was born in Baku on March 13, 1931. He graduated from the Faculty of Law of the State University in Rostov-on-Don and graduate school at the Institute of State and Law of the USSR Academy of Sciences. Baglay worked and taught in various scientific organizations and universities, was a professor at the Department of Constitutional Law at MGIMO and an honorary doctor of a number of universities.

In 1993, Baglay took part in the work of the Constitutional Conference, and two years later became a judge of the Constitutional Court. He was chairman of the court from 1997 to 2003. He was replaced in this post by Valery Zorkin. Baglay was awarded the Order of Merit for the Fatherland, II degree, the Order of Friendship of Peoples, and medals.
