The Basmanny Court of Moscow arrested Sergei Udaltsov, reports Mediazona . The leader of the Left Front is accused of justifying terrorism (Article 205.2 of the Criminal Code). The meeting to select a preventive measure was held behind closed doors.
“I am very sad and offended that in the current situation, for some reason, the authorities imprison patriots and do not notice the swindlers and scoundrels in power. Very disappointing. But we will fight. The truth is behind us. Thank you all for your support. I can’t call the charges that have been brought anything other than nonsense. Moral support for people who have not yet been convicted cannot be a justification for terrorism,” Udaltsov said before the start of the meeting.
According to the politician, a case was opened against him because of posts about members of a Marxist circle from Ufa, who were arrested in 2020 in connection with a terrorist community. Udaltsov did not admit guilt and linked his prosecution to the upcoming presidential elections.
The day before, Udaltsov’s house was searched. “They’re banging on the door, saying they’re from the police,” he wrote on his Telegram channel. This was later confirmed by his lawyer Violetta Volkova. She also said that the politician was taken away for questioning by the Investigative Committee.
“The Investigative Committee detained Udaltsov in accordance with Article 92 of the Code of Criminal Procedure, drawing up a corresponding protocol. He is a suspect in a case initiated under Art. 205.2 of the Criminal Code of the Russian Federation (justification of terrorism),” told TASS. Volkova
Sergei Udaltsov was an active participant in the protests in Russia, which began in 2011 after the State Duma elections. In 2014, the Moscow City Court sentenced him to four and a half years in prison in the Bolotnaya case. He was found guilty of organizing mass riots. Udaltsov did not admit guilt then. He was released in August 2017. In 2019, the ECHR awarded Udaltsov nine thousand euros in compensation for an unlawful verdict by a Russian court.
Udaltsov supports the Russian invasion of Ukraine, the annexation of Crimea and other Ukrainian territories. At the same time, he criticizes Vladimir Putin.
