In Iceland, on the Peninsula, Reykjann, after a series of earthquakes, began the eruption of the volcano. The nearest settlement - the fishing city of Grindavik - was evacuated, the local edition of RUV reports .

On the night of January 14, about 200 earthquakes occurred on the peninsula. At 4 am from Grindavik, in which about 4,000 people live, evacuation began. At the time of the start of eruption, only rescuers remained in the city.

“Not a single life is at risk, although the infrastructure may suffer,” wrote President of Iceland, Gudny Johanneson in the social network X. According to him, there are no interruptions with flights due to eruption.

In Grindavik, there is, among other things, the famous resort with hot sources of Blue Lagoon. Its visitors were also evacuated, reports RUV. Now the resort is closed.

RUV notes that a few hours after the start of the eruption 50-100 meters from Grindavik's houses, a new crack appeared. Its length is about 150 meters. “The eruption occurs very close to the houses in Grindavik, and when the lava reaches these houses is just a matter of time,” the newspaper writes.

According to The Guadrian, this is the fifth eruption of the volcano on Reykjesy since 2021. The latter occurred on December 18, 2023 - a few weeks before that, the authorities evacuated all the inhabitants of Grindavik. Several hundred of them have returned home over the past few weeks, but on January 14 they were evacuated again.
