On January 10, it became known that the White House supported the idea of confiscating part of the frozen Russian assets in favor of Ukraine.
According to the Russian authorities, about $ 300 billion of the Central Bank of the Russian Federation has been frozen in the banks of Western countries. Bloomberg, citing sources, reports that in the event of confiscation of frozen assets of the Russian authorities, they are going to challenge this decision in court with the help of international law firms.
The authorities of the European Union and the United States have been discussing the possibility of using Russian assets since 2022, but recently they transferred to the active development of the plan to transfer them to Kyiv. So, in December 2023, The New York Times reported that the United States, along with the allies, began to urgently prepare a strategy to use frozen assets of the Russian Federation to the second anniversary of the Russian invasion of Ukraine.
Journalists note that the development of a plan for the seizure of assets implies many controversial moments: for example, a decision on what goals to direct these assets to the help of the economy and restore the country or to military support.
Why does the Western countries not have to confiscate the assets of the Russian Federation for so long? And is there a chance that they will still be sent to Ukraine this time? We are talking about this with Alexander Kolyandr. He worked as a financial journalist in the BBC and The Wall Street Journal, as well as an analyst at Credit Suisse.
