“Alt” (from the English alternative - “other”) is a Western subculture, the followers of which resist the “mainstream” lifestyle: everyday style in clothes, popular music, minimalism. Alternative subcultures of the past are hippies, punks, dudes.
During the pandemic in the American segment of Tiktok, “alternative” bloggers began to gain popularity: users (mainly girls) published videos in catchy, most often dark clothes, which emphasized from visual images, which were then popular on the platform. In 2021, ALT also appeared in the Russian segment of Tiktok. The Russian -speaking hashtag #alt on the social network has two and a half billion views.
Representatives of the subculture are easiest to find out precisely in the image : they dress multi -layered, prefer T -shirts and sweaters with prints and use many accessories - from metal chains to hairpins of unusual shapes and sizes. In female images, strange details are welcome: cat or hare ears, painted medical masks, torn tights or high golfs, chockers from dried butterflies or other non -obvious materials. The style in hairstyles is careless : inaccurate haircuts and styling, multi -colored strands, dreadlocks or braids with iron rings.
Alt girls are brightly painted , greasy black arrows, hearts and lightning, use dark lipsticks and red blush. Young men are much less common among subculture followers, but they sometimes look up.
Alt combines elements of other previously popular subcultures: emo, Goth, e-girl . The most active representatives of ALT are schoolchildren and young girls. They upload most videos in Tiktok with an alt note and themselves joke themselves altushki after commentators. The most frequent topics of their videos are self -destruction in various forms: Alt talk about their disorders of food behavior , dependencies, self -harm, suicidal thoughts and psychiatric diagnoses . In the comments they are often criticized and ridiculed for posterity: they allegedly try to stand out from the crowd, publicly suffering.

At the end of October 2023, pictures appeared on Twitter with the “State Services” logo and the signature “Get altushek without queues and difficulties on gosuslugi.ru. Easier than it seems. " The logo and signature was most often followed by photographs of adult men who embrace young girls from the alt-tutor (or those who, in their opinion, are similar to them).
In these memes, Altushka gets the so -called Skuf. On the Internet, this is a middle-aged man who does not watch himself, looks older than his years, he has no friends and he does not know how to communicate with the girls. The word SKUF itself is a reduction from the name of the user “Dvach” by Alexei Skufin . Initially, the word was used only in a negative way, but many Twitter users began to ironically call themselves Skufs because of the similarity with him in lifestyle or habits. Today, among Twitter users, the version is popular that all men are “whining” with age, and there is nothing shameful in this. For some, Skuf became a synonym for a “man from the people”. For example, in January 2024, Boris Nadezhdin began to call a representative of the Skufs for the image, appearance and photographs from fishing and hiking for mushrooms.
Not without criticism of a new meme. Some Twitter users believe that this meme “reproduces male fantasies” and objectifies women.
The meme is still local, but sometimes it breaks outside the twitter and Tiktok. For example, “altushki from public services” devoted a poem. And on the Portal "Jurisurers", where users can ask lawyers a question, there was a request to help "return the lost altushki."
Altushki also began to be called those who have nothing to do with the subculture-for example, because of makeup during the “ naked party ”, Ivleeva, commentators called Ksenia Sobchak as a joke.
