Republicans blocked in the Senate a bill to help Ukraine and strengthen the southern border of the United States

Representatives of the Republican Party blocked in the Senate (the upper house of the US Congress) a bill providing for a package of national security measures worth $118 billion. According to Reuters, 49 senators voted in favor and 50 against.

The bill, in particular, provides for the allocation of 60 billion dollars to help Ukraine, 14 billion to help Israel, and 20 billion to strengthen the US-Mexico border, notes The New York Times.

Republicans initially demanded that the bill include tough border security measures, but rejected the initiative after former US President Donald Trump, who was nominated for a new term, opposed it.

After blocking the bill, Democratic Majority Leader Chuck Schumer tabled a foreign aid package without U.S. border security measures.

• Congress, amid internal political disagreements, since the fall of 2023 has been unable to agree on the allocation of more than $100 billion for military assistance to Ukraine, Israel, Taiwan, as well as strengthening the southern border of the United States.
• The US House of Representatives on February 6 rejected a bill to allocate $17.6 billion in aid to Israel, prepared by Republicans.
