The Chukotka authorities have passed a law allowing the killing of stray animals. This was reported on the website of the regional parliament.
“To ensure the safety of citizens and prevent tragic consequences, socially dangerous animals, as well as carriers of diseases dangerous to humans or other animals, are subject to humane euthanasia. Veterinary specialists will identify these signs,” the message says.
In July 2022, Vladimir Putin signed a law that gave regional authorities the right to independently determine policies regarding stray animals. After this, laws on the killing of stray dogs were adopted in the Astrakhan and Magadan regions, as well as in Buryatia , Altai .
In January 2024, it became known that the authorities of Buryatia began exterminating stray dogs. According to local animal rights activists, about two dozen animals were killed in one of the shelters. After this, environmental activists organized a campaign to evacuate dogs from local shelters to other regions that were safe for them.
In turn, the authorities of the Astrakhan region adopted a ban on feeding stray animals and promised to introduce administrative liability for its violation.
