Lawyer: convicted in the murder case of the publisher of the Dagestan newspaper “Chernovik” was found dead in Karelian IK-7

On February 10, Murad Shuaibov, one of those convicted in the murder of Gadzhimurad Kamalov, publisher of the Dagestani newspaper Chernovik, was found dead in Karelian correctional colony No. 7 in Segezha. Timur Shcheblykin, Shuaibov’s lawyer, reported this to Mediazona.

According to Shcheblykin, on February 6 he visited his client in IK-9 of Petrozavodsk, where Shuaibov was transferred in March 2019. Recently, the prisoner was kept in the SUON detachment.

“There were no prerequisites [for suicide],” says Shcheblykin. “The conditions for serving his sentence in the colonies were never good, but he did not tell me that his problems were so serious that they were incompatible with life.”

Recently, the administration of IK-9 insisted that Shuaibov write an application for transfer to the PKT, where the conditions of detention are formally a little milder than in the punishment cell. However, Shuaibov refused to do this, says his lawyer.

“When relatives were informed that he had died, I began to find out information and found out that the next day [after the lawyer’s visit] he was escorted to IK-7 Segezhi,” says Shcheblykin. “As I was informed, he wrote an application for voluntary transfer to the EPKT, which we have in IK-7 [Segezha].”

On February 8, Shuaibov was admitted to IK-7, and the next day “employees, apparently from IK-7, communicated with him,” says Shcheblykin. According to him, the prisoner died two days after being transferred.

Shcheblykin is not aware of any penalties as a result of which Shuaibov could be transferred to stricter conditions of detention.

“There were no prerequisites for him to go to EPKT,” he says. — As far as I know, the body is still in IK-7 Segezha. I don’t know the exact time of death and details yet.”

In September 2019, Murad Shuaibov, together with other prisoners of IK-9 Petrozavodsk, reported to Mediazona about torture. According to the convict, he was beaten, doused with water and locked in a cell.

In 2016, the Leninsky District Court of Makhachkala sentenced Shuaibov to 10.5 years in a maximum security colony in the case of the murder of the executive secretary of the Dagestan newspaper Istina, editor-in-chief of the Sogratl newspaper Malik Akhdilov.

In 2022, Shuaibov was convicted in another case - the murder of the publisher of the Dagestan newspaper Chernovik, Gadzhimurad Kamalov. Combined with the previous sentence, his sentence was increased to 23 years in prison.
