How can a punk not get fucked in exile and be useful? They asked Sid from “Cockroaches!”
Punk band "Cockroaches!" thundered in Russia throughout the nineties and zeros. Although the dudes played four chords, their lyrics about freedom, equality and solidarity inspired fans. But such cuts did not please the Putin regime, the garbage and other bond-bearers. They started banning concerts, knocking and bullshitting on social networks even before the war in Ukraine. A month after it started, the group broke up, and its frontman Dmitry “Sid” Spirin was forced to move away. But the punk rocker did not remain silent, but “focused on information activism” and turned his social networks into an anti-war mouthpiece. “That’s why we fucked off, so as not to keep quiet, because in Russia we were put on a bottle for this “not keeping quiet,” he says in an interview.
We talked with Dima about how not to be overwhelmed by depression in exile and find the strength to “throw another small coal into the furnace of the approaching end of Putinism.” And also about why many punk rockers in Russia supported the war, the recording of a new album, gopota, garbage and “deep men”.
The text was made in collaboration with the media "Terta" .
“I never loved Russia”
Dima, tell me where you are now, and how it is, and why you are there?
I am in the city of Buenos Aires, the capital of Argentina. I have been here for a year and one month. I am here primarily because I cannot be in Russia for a number of reasons, which, I believe, no longer need to be listed. People who more or less follow the situation in Russia understand why guys like me can no longer be in it. After the war started, I [my wife and I] did a little research and found out that Argentina is one of the countries in the world where you can go to get citizenship without hellish hemorrhoids and not after half your life. That's why we're here.
You said correctly that there is no point in explaining why everyone is leaving. Because things are crazy in Russia, but could you tell me about your move? How did you perceive it? You lived in Moscow all your life and I personally left my city in tears. How did you decide to do this and what was the last straw?
In general, I never loved Russia and was not a patriot of this country, so I did not treat life in it with special trepidation. I've been toying with the idea that I would someday leave this country and live somewhere abroad since I was a teenager. There were a lot of things that didn’t suit me in communist Russia, and in perestroika Russia, and in early Yeltsin’s Russia, and in early Putin’s Russia. This country doesn't seem right for me. For a long time, the idea that I would leave her and live somewhere in another country was just a fantasy. There was no clear understanding of how I would accomplish this, how this would happen and what kind of “other” country it would be. For a long time I lived exclusively with the ephemeral dream that someday I would stop being in this place. Therefore, when I finally got close to realizing my dream, I was completely ready internally. This was not, like many Russians, a sharp necessity, an overstepping of oneself, a break with the environment, friends, culture. This also happened to me gradually.
First, in 2014, having purchased property in Budapest, my wife and I moved there and began to live in two countries. We rested, lived and spent time in Hungary, and returned to Russia for certain periods. Sometimes we lived there for months, I toured with the band, made music, rehearsed, recorded. Over these eight years, until the end of February 2022, I have fully adapted and gotten used to life abroad. Therefore, when February 24, 2022 came, I did not have a dilemma: leave, leave everything, break away from my usual life, or stay. I stayed at home anyway, it’s just that my home at that time was already in Budapest.
What I'm really sad and nostalgic about is the small circle of my friends, the people I love and remember, who are close to me and like-minded people. And also about a small piece in Moscow, which is my area, my habitat, the places that I loved. Sometimes I mentally take walks along Smolenka, along Arbat, along Kutuzovsky, through my favorite courtyards... I sit there on benches and so on. This is all that connects me with Russia, because Russia outside the Moscow Ring Road has never been close to me. I shunned her, I was afraid of her, I did not accept her values, nor her mood, nor her stars, nor her ideas, nor her smells, nor her fucking... nothing, in short. I thought that this was alien to me, and I was alien to this environment.
Why did you shy away? Why was it “not your country”? How does it appear to you? Can you describe it?
Gopota! On the streets, in law enforcement agencies, in power. A brute, blind, aggressive, vile force that does not like any manifestations of individualism, otherness, or originality. This has always been the case. I cannot single out a period in the history of the country - maybe only the second half of the nineties and a few years of the 2000s... until Putinism took off - when it could be said that this “national idea” faded into the background and became less obvious. And so, in general, this is what I hate... it’s just... fucking, well, fucked up... it insults me so much, it makes me run headlong anywhere... just away from this.

In some interview you said about the people that they are “deeps”. Were you talking about these people you just described, about the bastard?
This is not my term. It is clear that it is partially offensive. But these are deep people. The same ones who vote for Putin want a strong hand, hate gays, and support a “special military operation.”
You had and still have a platform to communicate with these “deeps.” Have you tried, maybe I won’t say it very correctly, but to re-educate them?
I suppose that the entire 30 years of the existence of our group - and not only ours, but many other groups that in one way or another stood in positions of Westernism in the cultural sense - were years of attempts to remake the “glubinariya”. With our existence, songs, sound, lyrics, aesthetics, ideas that we demonstrated through our songs and interviews... And the fact how pathetic the results of attempts to re-educate the “glubinar” turned out to be, to make him different, to impose values alien to him... this fact indicates that this is impossible. We oppose ourselves to a force that is many times more powerful. It's like trying to break through a concrete wall with your forehead. If we take as an illustration the gatherings of “Cockroaches”, “Naiva”, the group “Distemper”, outside the Moscow Ring Road, where so many people live, if you take the gatherings in Ryazan, Kaluga, Saratov, Kemerovo, then it’s just shameful. This is a statistical error. This is such a tiny audience... Of course, no one was standing with a thermometer and it is unknown how many people actually could hear this and become infected with these ideas. Maybe now they are sitting somewhere in Georgia and pouring, as they say, shit on their homeland. Ah-ahahah. If this is the case, then I am very happy. But, again, statistically this is very little.
To answer your question. Yes, I tried... I failed... we have all failed at this point. But I personally am not very worried about this, because those who are really worried about such people are those who are now in prison in Russia: Yashin, Navalny ( the interview took place before the murder of the politician - NF ), Kara-Murza. These are real patriots whose hearts truly ached and ached for the Russian Federation, for the Russian people. And their attempts to remake it were attempts to make life in this country better. The Russian simply did not appreciate these attempts. But as for me, I don’t give a damn about a Russian. Well, he didn’t want to - I won’t ruin his life further, force him and shame him. I won’t say: “Fuck, why are you listening to The King and the Clown instead of NOFX!” And Navalny, Kara-Murza, Yashin - I feel sorry for them, of course. But at the same time, I want to ask them: “Why, for whom are all these sacrifices, your deadlines?! People don’t want this, they don’t accept it... But they want a new Stalin.” This is what they really want. They want “order.” They want “their children not to be fucked in the ass.” This must be respected.

A small remark about Saratov and re-education. I was born and lived in the toughest district of Saratov, with riots and shootings. And I listened to “Cockroaches!” And you - in the case of me and a bunch of people from Ryazan or somewhere else - succeeded. Maybe not in the percentage you wanted, but nonetheless. This is what I mean so that you don’t get upset that nothing worked out.
I'm not upset. I just want to say that if we take 300 spectators of that Saratov concert, then most likely 200 of them are now cursing me and believe that I betrayed them. They believe that they once followed me, listened to some songs, believed something like that, and then I told them: “Putin is shit and should be drowned for Ukraine.” And at that moment it seemed to them that I had trampled on something important in their lives, because I turned out to be a national traitor, and they were not ready to “betray their homeland.”
What I mean is that even in those cases when in the so-called Saratov we managed to attract a large number of people as our fans, this does not mean at all that all 100% of them became like-minded people. The war turned out to be a watershed, a litmus test, a tough test that life threw at us all. She suggested that we all go through it. She invited us to correlate with the war what was inside each of us. Someone inside had a love for Putin, the fatherland, a strong hand. And this love turned out to be stronger than the rock songs he had been listening to for the last 20 years. Well, screw him.
Why didn't it work out for you, do you think?
Initially, the idea of such music and such a group was doomed to failure. We played such music, declared such ideas that would never be accepted by the majority in Russia. But first of all, I had hope for a miracle. And, secondly, to the fact that, well, global changes began throughout the country as a whole - first with Gorbachev’s perestroika, and then with the emergence of a country called “democratic Russia”, more and more freedoms appeared, democratization. And so I thought that perhaps these two processes: our small one - the existence of our group and the global one - the movement of the whole country towards the civilized world, they will at some point merge and become the factor that will bring our music and the masses to a point of contact. But this calculation did not justify itself.
“The fuck did I do that?”
Do you remember the moment when you realized that your audience did not understand you and was thinking in the opposite direction? What did you think then?
What did I think? “Fucking hell! Why the hell did I do that? It turns out that all these crowds were hitting their ears or what?” And I also thought that what a blessing that I was not there, not with them. Fuck them. That's what I thought.
But not all punk bands experienced such a break with the audience. Many punks supported the war, and their fans supported them. What do you think about them?
First of all, I think they're all assholes, not punk rock. As I already said, for me personally this war is the most important event of my life. I lived for 47 years in the feeling that the wars were behind us, that there was peace all around, that good had triumphed over evil. And if this is not entirely true, then it is certainly not the country of which I am a citizen that will change this order of things and become an aggressor. And not towards aliens or ISIS, but towards the country whose people she falsely called fraternal all this time.
War is the most important test of all people for everything. And when I see punks who fought against fascism, totalitarianism, for freedom, for minorities, and now, at a minimum, do not react, as if they do not live in a society that began an aggressive war against an independent free neighboring state, but at most support it, then for me this is a reason to simply put a big cross on them. I don’t want to hear anything about them, I don’t want to see them, damn, all these fucking names: “Lomonosov Plan”, “Yorsh”, “Distemper”, “Laughter”…. They just make you laugh. I apologize for the tautology. All these announcements of festivals, some of their releases, their participation in some kind of fascist sabantuy led by Kostya Kinchev... All this just causes fucking sarcastic grins in me and in the guys from the punk scene who take an anti-war position. So what can I say? They simply did not pass the main test in their lives, they crap themselves.

Why did this happen? What excuses do they find for themselves? The dudes drowned for the reasonable, the good, the eternal, and then the dick - and now they drown for “our boys”...
There is nothing else there except those mechanisms with the help of which ordinary Russians come to terms with the war. The usual psychological mechanisms that force a person inside a state structure that is waging an aggressive war to come to terms with this situation. Just accept it and start living with it. For example, as the bass guitarist of the group “Prince” said, they in the group are not interested in politics. They consider what is happening in Ukraine to be a certain event against which they cannot do anything. They have their own lives, their own families, children, songs and fans, and they consider this pool of interests to be the highest in their lives. That is, everything else - any politics, any blood, any suffering, social upheaval - is somewhere far away, does not directly concern them and therefore does not bother them. That is why they decide to perform at the bottom of the state flag of the Russian Federation in the midst of war.
The drummer of the group “Yorsh” came to see me on Instagram. And he gives out a full range of vatnic Russianism: “Why should we be ashamed of this country?”, “Doesn’t Zelensky take weapons from NATO?”, “Wasn’t Ukraine preparing for an attack on Russia for the last six months before we launched a preemptive strike?”, “Aren’t you getting money from the State Department there? What do you live on then?”... This is the rhetoric of the drummer of a punk band.
And is this the case for everyone?
In general it is true. We all played in punk bands, we all sang these songs, we all proclaimed these values. But the war began and all of us were faced with a choice: talk about our rejection of the war from the stage and sit down, or lose the opportunity to perform live, curse this fucking country and leave it far away, or continue to perform carefully, without speaking out much, but at the same time continue our musical careers, since “we have families, children, and this is the only thing we know how to do.” And so they simply followed the path of least resistance. These are just ordinary Russians who decided to stay in Russia because this is their home and here they have a mortgage, a dog, and a daughter who just started going to a good school.
They just initially showed naivety and lack of understanding of what they were really getting into. It seemed to them that this was just another fucking military adventure of our fucking homeland, something like what Medvedev staged in Georgia in 2008, and Putin staged in Crimea in 2014. No one was put on a bottle for songs, no one was forced to make penitential videos for some carts between songs, and now, probably, everything will be the same, they thought. If they had been a little more perspicacious, a little more intelligent, they would have realized that several months would pass and it would no longer be possible to take a neutral position or a moderate protest position.
“What the fuck am I doing in Argentina and why is my group over?”

I'll throw in a little. When I was preparing for the interview, I came across various accusations addressed to you about the fact that “Cockroaches!” performed at pro-government events. For example, in Sevastopol, where the Surgeon and Putin came. And people say that Spirin is an artist who will go anywhere for money. What can you answer to this?
What can I say to them? I will not dwell on points and make excuses for each of my concerts. But then I want to ask them: “Guys, have you ever given up everything and emigrated?” “Have you ever finished a successful business, disbanded a popular group, sold everything you have and moved to Latin America to live?” If not, then I don’t consider you generally worthy interlocutors on the topic: “Spirin for money - whatever.” If you think I am such a person, then what the fuck am I doing in Argentina and why did my group end? Now in the wonderful country of Russia, whore, in which we no longer have any competitors in the person of “Pornofilms”, “Naiva”, “Shadows of Freedom”, “Kiss-Kis”, or “Anacondas”, I would earn my money. I would be fucking with Roma the Beast right now, fucking Donetsk. This is what I would do, since we are talking about some unscrupulousness in matters of money.
So, what about the performance in Sevastopol...
I'll interrupt right away. We have never played in “Russian” Sevastopol.
... yes, I'm talking about 2012. Did you know that Putin or Gundyaev would be there, were you interested? Or did they just tell you: “We’re performing there next week”?
Before 2014, I was rarely interested in the origin of the money, the organizers and the presence of certain slogans, appeals, propaganda on the stage and in the area of the events in which we were to take part. On the Russian rock scene, such scrupulousness and awareness are generally very rare... Therefore, when, say, the manager told me: “We have a concert at a bike show in Simferopol on such and such a date,” I knew that it was organized by Night Wolves, that the Surgeon was already a supporter, hanging out with Putin, and nothing more... But Putin had not yet started the war.
Ahahaha.

I don't care about that.
What's next?
