The European Parliament will adopt a resolution in connection with the murder of Alexei Navalny. Yulia Navalnaya will give a speech at the session

The European Parliament will hold a plenary session on February 28, where Yulia Navalnaya will speak. Her husband Alexei Navalny, the main opposition politician in Russia, was killed in prison.

Following the session, on February 29, the European Parliament will adopt a resolution in connection with the murder of Navalny. The documents will also talk about the need to take measures "in support of political prisoners and oppressed civil society" in Russia. This was reported to Meduza by Petar Tanev, a freelance adviser to the Bulgarian delegation to the European Parliament and a consultant to the Free Russia Foundation . Tanev participated in promoting the draft resolution.

Petar Tanev said that MEPs "want to honour Alexei Navalny by immortalising his name as a fighter for freedom and democracy." According to Tanev, the European Parliament regards Navalny's murder as "the culmination of long-term political repression in Russia."

  • Alexei Navalny was serving a 19-year prison sentence. He was in the Polar Wolf prison in the village of Kharp in the Yamalo-Nenets Autonomous Okrug. On February 16, the Federal Penitentiary Service of the Russian Federation reported that Navalny had died. His associates said that Navalny had been murdered.
  • Yulia Navalnaya recorded an address in which she said that “Putin killed Alexei Navalny.”
