Instagram and YouTube are experiencing an outage

Users complained about a massive outage of Facebook, Instagram (owned by Meta) and YouTube. This is evidenced by data from the Downdetector service.

76% of complaints filed against Facebook are related to problems logging into your account. 62% of users who complained about Instagram reported difficulties with the application. 44% of complaints about problems with YouTube refer to problems with the site.

Meta reported that they are looking into the situation. Possible reasons for the failure were not mentioned.

Meanwhile, Hong Kong provider HGC Global Communications Limited reported that 4 of 15 submarine cables in the Red Sea were cut, affecting 25% of traffic worldwide. The company added that it is taking measures to mitigate the consequences of the incident.

At the end of February, a major disruption occurred in the Russian segment of the Internet. Users reported interruptions in the work of Telegram, Viber and Whatsapp, the social network VKontakte, as well as video hosting Youtube. Deputy Chairman of the State Duma Committee on Information Policy and Communications Anton Tkachev said that this was due to the actions of Roskomnadzor. According to him, the department was looking for “bottlenecks” that could in the future lead to the possible unblocking of sites or services banned in Russia. Tkachev also explained previous failures in the work of the Runet by the actions of Roskomnadzor. “This is not the first failure; we saw them last year as well,” he said.

In January, a massive outage occurred in the RU domain zone. Users complained about difficulties accessing the websites of a number of large services, including banks and marketplaces. Telecom operators noted that the problem was not related to them. The Network Freedom Project attributed the failure to a broken DNSSEC. It represents the protection of the national domain name service in the form of a digital signature.
