This is the maximum indicator for previous years according to the calculations of Missing Migrants Project. Since 2014, the project has been conducting statistics of the dead and missing during the movement of Migranto: K.
Safe ways of migration remain inaccessible to many people - thousands of migranto: they decide to move in risky conditions. In 2023, the number of dead during the movement was 20% more than a year earlier. Most of them died or disappeared into the Mediterranean Sea - at least 3129 people.
An unprecedented number of Migranto's deaths: K was registered in Africa (1866 people) and Asia (2138 people). In Africa, most deaths occurred in the Sahara and on the Sea Route to the Canary Islands. In Asia, hundreds of deaths of Afghan refugees were registered last year: OK and refugees: OK ROHINGA .
Context
In total since 2014, Missing Migrants Project counted the death of 63,872 migranto: K. More than half of them sank. Also, the causes of the death of refugees: OK there were accidents, illness or lack of access to medical care, weather and natural conditions of movement. More than four thousand were killed on migration routes for a violent death.
The remains of 26,553 people who died during the movement were not discovered.
The most dangerous for Migranto: they have been leaving in the Mediterranean Sea, where a surge in mortality has been observed in recent years - since 2014, at least 22,953 people have died there.
Missing Migrants Project receives data from local authorities (coastal security, forensic experts, sheriffs), from interviews with survivors, from the UN Supreme Commissioner (UN UN), from non -governmental organizations and from media reports.
