Cargo ship collapses highway bridge in Baltimore

In the American city of Baltimore, a road bridge collapsed after a cargo ship crashed into one of the supports, CNN reports.

The TV channel published a video of the collision. The footage shows how several sections of the bridge, several hundred meters long, fell into the water.

According to local authorities, there is no exact data on casualties yet, but eyewitnesses of the collapse say that several cars ended up in the water after it.

In turn, the British newspaper The Guardian, citing the US Coast Guard, writes that a 29-meter Dali cargo ship flying the Singapore flag crashed into the bridge support. Earlier, it left the port of Baltimore and headed for the capital of Sri Lanka, Colombo.

Local media reported that a fire started on the ship that crashed into the bridge before the collision. They also clarified that at least seven cars were in the water after the collapse. Authorities said a team of divers had been sent to the site of the collapse to conduct a rescue operation.

The bridge that collapsed was built in 1977. It is named after Francis Scott Key, the lyricist of the US national anthem. The total length of the bridge is just over two and a half kilometers.
