Samsung Pay will stop working with the Mir card

The Samsung Pay payment system will no longer work with the Mir card.

“Starting April 3, 2024, adding and using Mir cards in Samsung Pay will no longer be available,” the company’s website says .

At the same time, it became known that the Mir Pay application disappeared from the Google Play application store.

Shortly after the start of the full-scale Russian invasion of Ukraine in February 2022, the Google Pay and Apple Pay payment systems stopped working in Russia. Samsung Pay continued to function in Russia.

According to The Moscow Times, other Samsung divisions previously stopped working with Russia. In particular, Samsung Heavy Industries stopped producing equipment for Arctic LNG ships under a contract with the Russian shipbuilding company Zvezda.

Samsung also stopped official deliveries of its goods to Russia and stopped the production of household appliances at Russian factories. According to media reports, the company does not intend to return to the Russian market until the end of the war in Ukraine. According to experts, Samsung, like other large foreign companies, fears secondary sanctions from the United States.

In February 2024, the operator of the Mir National Payment Card System came under US blocking sanctions. After this, banks in different countries around the world began to refuse to service these cards.

So in March it became known that most banks in Armenia would refuse to work with Mir cards from March 30. And before that, in particular, the Kazakh Bereke Bank, a former subsidiary of Sberbank, announced the cessation of work with Mir cards.

At the same time, banks in some countries refused to service Mir cards shortly after the start of the Russian invasion of Ukraine, but long before the introduction of sanctions against the system operator.

Thus, at the end of September 2022, the Uzbek unified banking processing center Uzcard announced the cessation of work with Mir cards. This decision was then explained by “technical reasons”, but a week later Uzcard announced that it would not resume servicing Mir cards due to the high risk of secondary sanctions.

Also, in September 2022,there were no banks working with Mir cards in Turkey. Then three state banks refused to service cards of this system - Ziraat Bank, Vakifbank and Halkbank. Prior to this, private banks Isbank and Denizbank stopped accepting Mir cards.
