Scientists, lawyers and activists from around the world sent expert conclusions to the International Criminal Court (MUS), in which they ask to “put an end to impunity for environmental crimes,” reports The Guardian.

Earlier in February, the chief prosecutor of the Mus Karim Khan announced the development of a new software document on environmental crimes. It is planned to include references to the Roman Statute , environmental contracts, international law and decisions of other international and national courts.

The competence of the Musa includes the persecution of persons responsible for genocide, war crimes and crimes against humanity. Experts propose to equate the mass cutting of forests, oil spills and chemicals. This will allow prosecution of politicians, owners of corporations and leaders of organized criminal groups, whose activity leads to the destruction of the environment, lawyers and scientists note .

It is proposed to be provided for court prosecution, among other things, for damage to the climate. Experts emphasize that some of the leaders of the companies “systematically encouraged irrational methods of mining fuel”, although they knew about the negative impact of greenhouse gases.

Part of the proposals also concerns responsibility for fakes on global warming: “Solving the problem of impunity of those who spreads deliberate misinformation on global warming is an important step towards reducing the use of fossil fuel, which threatens humanity and living planet,” said representatives of the World Council of Churches.

At the same time, as previously noted by the American lawyer Patel, the Rio de Janeric Declaration on the Environment and Development recognizes the right to sustainable development, which allows “acceptable levels of environmental degradation in the name of progress”. In addition, according to the rules of the Mus, the accused are not obliged to disclose all the materials at their disposal. This means that the International Criminal Court may have difficulty collecting evidence from the internal archives of corporations.

The chief prosecutor of the Mus Karim Khan promises that new norms will be ready by the end of 2024.
