In Russia in 2023, 1191 dangerous weather phenomenon was registered. There were 976 of them a year earlier. The report of Roshydromet testifies to this.
Over the year, the number of hail cases increased - by 123%, abnormally cold weather and severe frosts - by 73%, severe precipitation - by 49%, frosts - by 36%, strong wind - by 22%. In total, 2224 storm warnings were released.
Most often, severe precipitation, strong wind and frosts took place last year: they had a total of 78% of all dangerous meteorological phenomena.
“[Data of weather phenomena] caused the most significant damage to the sectors of the economy and the private sector. In particular, due to frequent and strong frosts in the European part of Russia, the ovaries of fruit and ceremic crops and cranberries in the swamps died, ”Roshydrome said.
448 weather phenomena led to serious consequences for the economy and people - this is 34% more than last year. At the same time, the 2023rd did not become record: in 2018, 465 weather phenomena turned out to be destructive, and in 2013-455. In general, the dynamics in the 21st century is alarming: in Roshydromet, for comparison, they indicate that in 1996 only 206 natural phenomena with dangerous consequences occurred.
“The most noticeable growth in the number of dangerous phenomena in Russia occurred between the 1990s and 2000s, in recent years the trend has been continuing, but it is more weak,” said Anna Romanovskaya, director of the Institute of Global Climate and Ecology.
One of the most serious cataclysms in 2023 was recognized as the Typhoon “Hanun”, which covered Primorye in August. Because of it, 2.8 thousand people were evacuated, according to the Ministry of Emergencies, in 15 municipalities of Primorye, 4620 residential buildings, 5555 personalities, 28 sections of roads were flooded. Damage to the economy of the region exceeded 7 billion rubles.
In the scientific community, extreme weather phenomena are associated with a global climate change. According to the World Meteorological Organization (VMO), 2023 was the hottest in the history of observations. “Extreme weather conditions daily destroy the lives of people and their sources of livelihood,” said Peteri Taalas, General Secretary of VMO.
According to the existing scientific consensus, the main cause of climate change is the emissions of greenhouse gases as a result of human activity: mainly associated with the burning of fossil fuel (coal and oil). It is worth noting that Russia, as a country of oil export at a climate conference in Dubai , opposed a phased refusal to use fossil fuel and transition to renewable energy sources.
