According to El Nacional newspaper, the oldest man on the planet, Juan Vicente Perez Mora, died at the age of 114 years and 339 days due to respiratory complications. Earlier, the publication noted that the Venezuelan is in good health and has no diseases requiring medical intervention.
The death of the centenarian was confirmed by the governor of the state of Tachira, Freddy Bernal.
Juan Vicente Perez Mora was born on May 27, 1909 in the small Venezuelan town of El Cobre in the state of Tachira on the border with Colombia. He was the ninth of ten children in the family.
“I express my condolences to his family and all the residents of El Cobre, Tachira State. May God meet him in his Kingdom of Heaven!” wrote Venezuelan President Nicolas Maduro on his X page (formerly Twitter).
Since childhood, Perez Mora has been involved in farming. In an interview, he shared the secret of longevity: “Work hard, take vacations, go to bed early, drink a glass of brandy every day, love God and always carry him in your heart.”
The Venezuelan was married to Ediofina del Rosario Garcia for 60 years - she died in 1997. They had six sons and five daughters, as well as 41 grandchildren, 18 great-grandchildren and 12 great-great-grandchildren.
Perez Mora survived two world wars and on February 4, 2022, was recognized by the Guinness Book of Records as the oldest man on the planet at the age of 112 years and 253 days. Before him, this status was held by the Spaniard Saturnino de la Fuente Garcia, who died at the age of 112 in 2022.
The Guinness Book of Records website published a message from the Book's editor-in-chief, Craig Glenday: “Sir Perez Mora was not only the oldest citizen of his country and the first South American recognized by GWR as the oldest living man, but also the fourth oldest man in history whose age was officially confirmed.” The site also notes that the next oldest man should be the Japanese Gisaburo Sonobe, who is currently 112 years old.
