The Chechen Ombudsman called the death of a native of the region in a Moscow police department a suicide. He was reportedly detained after the terrorist attack at Crocus

The Commissioner for Human Rights in Chechnya, Mansur Soltaev, said that the detention of a native of the republic, Askhab Uspanov, was not related to the terrorist attack in Crocus City Hall, and his death is considered a suicide by the Moscow police department. Soltaev published a post about this in his Telegram channel.

The opposition Chechen telegram channel 1ADAT reported that Uspanov was detained on the night of March 22, immediately after the terrorist attack in a concert hall near Moscow. Information about the death of a native of Chechnya was confirmed to the Agency by his mother. As reported, Uspanov was detained at a traffic stop, shortly after which he died at the police station. 1ADAT claimed that the native of Chechnya was tortured and then staged a suicide.

The Chechen Ombudsman called reports about the detention and circumstances of Uspanov’s death “rumors and false speculation” spread by “pro-Western media” and “foreign agents.” With reference to the relatives of the deceased, Soltaev said that Uspanov was detained several hours before the terrorist attack and he could not have been involved in the attack on Crocus.

“From the very beginning, this matter has been under my personal control. Askhab Uspanov, detained in Moscow, died at the police station. According to the official version of law enforcement officers, Uspanov committed suicide,” the ombudsman said. According to him, the uncle of the deceased approached him with a request to check the circumstances of Uspanov’s death.

• On the evening of March 22, a group of armed people opened fire on visitors and employees of Crocus City Hall, and then set fire to the concert hall. According to the latest data from Russian authorities, 144 people were killed in the attack and more than 550 were injured.
• Ten defendants have been arrested in connection with the terrorist attack, including four alleged perpetrators. At the meeting to select a preventive measure, they showed signs of torture - one of them was brought in on a medical gurney.
