In Yerevan, on April 3, the Savetreesyerevan rally was held - about 100 people opposed the new city landscaping program. Because of it, about 200 trees have already been cut down in the capital of Armenia, in the coming days they plan to destroy another 3 thousand city authorities reported that they would land 2.5 thousand trees-including Sakura as compensation.
According to Smole, the author of the podcast about the Ecology "Oxygen cocktail" Nikita Nekrasov, the existing landscaping plan developed in the 1950s. It was a few rings of trees of different breeds, mainly oaks and elm. In the center of the rings was the lowest and hot point of the city.
“One of the most important things in landscaping is the shading of the territories. Sakura, which is now planted in different areas of Yerevan, will not be able to fulfill this function due to its natural qualities. Plus, sakura leaves are not adapted to delay the amount of dust and dirt that can delay higher trees with denser foliage, ”Nekrasov explains.
According to the local city hall, the trees planted more than 60 years ago were outdated and deformed, and about 70% of them are completely ill. However, Nekrasov, citing Yerevan biologists, claims that the trees are healthy.
The Sakuras, which they have already managed to replace part of the eluses and oaks, did not climb Yerevan climatically, was confirmed by a member of the Council of Elders Yerevan, the ex-director of GNCO "landscaping and protection of the environment" Christina Vardanyan in a conversation with Smol.
“According to the hygienic standards of landscaping streets, it is impossible to change large trees to Sakura,” said Vardanyan. - The main tasks of landscaping are a decrease in thermal stress, protection against overheating of structures, asphalt, delay in carcinogenic ultraviolet rays. Those Sakuras who were planted and continue to plant in Yerevan, do not solve any of these problems. ”
During the rally, the mayor of Yerevan Tigran Avines came to the protesters. He could not provide people with scientific justifications for the actions of the city hall, but promised to suspend trees. Protesters expect that during this time an independent examination will be appreciated by a new program of landscaping.
