Peter Pellegrini scored 53.12% in the second round of the presidential election in Slovakia after the counting of 98% of the vote. His opponent, the former Foreign Minister of the country, Ivan Korkchka, who gained 46.87%, has already recognized his defeat and congratulated Pellegrini on the victory. During his speech in Bratislava, Pellegrini promised " to ensure that Slovakia remained on the side of the world, not war ." He also criticized the EU and NATO for providing military assistance to Ukraine and called for negotiations.
Peter Pellegrini participated in the presidential election from the party “Voice - Social Democracy”, which is part of the government coalition. The same coalition includes the party of the current prime minister of the country Robert Fitzo, advocating the cessation of military assistance to Ukraine and against the entry of Ukraine to NATO.
Pellegrini will become the sixth president of Slovakia since the country gained independence after the collapse of Czechoslovakia in 1993. At the moment, this post is occupied by Zuzan Chaputova - the first woman who has become the head of state in the entire history of modern Slovakia.
