Deputy Defense Minister detained for bribe

Russian Deputy Defense Minister Timur Ivanov was detained on suspicion of taking a bribe (Part 6 of Article 290 of the Criminal Code). This was reported to the Investigative Committee. The department does not provide details of the arrest.

According to TASS, we are talking about a bribe worth at least a million rubles. Ivanov faces up to 15 years in prison. RBC drew attention to the fact that the deputy minister was present today at the board of the Ministry of Defense led by Sergei Shoigu. At the same time, Putin’s press secretary Dmitry Peskov said that Shoigu was informed about the impending detention of Ivanov in advance.

In 2019, Forbes magazine placed Timur Ivanov in first place in the list of the 100 richest security officials in Russia. According to the publication, his family’s income in 2018 amounted to 136.7 million rubles. He himself earned 13.6 million that year.

Before joining the Ministry of Defense, Ivanov worked in the department of construction of nuclear facilities of Minatom, was vice president of Atomstroyexport and was a member of the board of Inter RAO UES. He also headed the Russian Energy Agency of the Ministry of Energy. Then he got into the administration of the Moscow region and in 2012 became deputy chairman of the government. In this position, he oversaw electricity issues.

Soon, in the same 2012, Ivanov went to work at the Ministry of Defense. For three years, he headed the Oboronstroy company and oversaw the largest departmental construction projects. During this time, Ivanov carried out several assignments of “special importance”, which were reported to Putin, Kommersant wrote . For example, in 2014, his company built the Sevastopol Presidential Cadet School in three months, and in 2015 it completed the construction of the Patriot Park, the opening of which was attended by Putin. In November of the same year, Ivanov received the title of “Honored Builder of Russia” from Putin. In 2016, he was promoted to deputy minister.

In the summer of 2019, Project found Ivanov’s hidden luxury real estate worth almost a billion rubles, including a house in Uspenskoye and an apartment on Ostozhenka. In 2022, an investigation into Ivanov and his ex-wife was published by the Anti-Corruption Foundation. Navalny's associates also found real estate, cars and antiques worth millions of euros from the deputy minister.

The Dossier Research Center wrote that after the start of the war in Ukraine, Timur Ivanov was also responsible for the restoration of occupied Mariupol. The deputy minister inflated the shifts at all facilities several times, thus accruing personal capital, the project argued.
