In Yerevan, the police detain the protesters against the transfer of territories to Azerbaijan. Several hundred people took part in the protest, reports Rusnews.
In the center of Yerevan, protesters blocked the roads, opposing the transfer of the territory to Azerbaijan and demanding the resignation of the Prime Minister of Armenia Nikola Pashinyan. The security forces began to detain the protesters.
Protests against the transfer of the territory were previously not held in the capital. April 22 resident: Nitsa Tavush region overlapped the Yerevan-Tbilisi highway. Protesters opposed the decision to convey the nearby abandoned villages of Azerbaijan, since thereby the location of the Azerbaijani troops will move to the villages of Tavush. A resident: Nitsa villages of Wesecar, Kirantz and Berkaber-about one and a half thousand people-may encounter partial isolation due to the fact that some of the roads leading to them may be in Azerbaijan.
On April 19, Deputy Prime Ministers of Armenia and Azerbaijan agreed on the first stage of the border delimitation. Until May 15, the parties should sign a protocol clarifying the coordinates of the boundaries.
Azerbaijani territorial claims to Armenia
In December 2022, Azerbaijan established a complete blockade of the self-proclaimed Nagorno-Karabakh Republic, and in September 2023 he made an armed seizure of the region. The Armenian population - more than 100 thousand people - were forced to flee to Armenia.
After the capture of the NKR, the President of Azerbaijan Ilham Aliyev announced his intention to demand from Armenia the immediate return of eight abandoned Azerbaijani villages, over which she established partial control during the first Karabakh war in the early 1990s.
On March 9, Azerbaijan officially demanded the immediate transfer of those that have a border with Azerbaijan: Hayimli, Baganis-Airum, Auchay-Askipara and Gyzylhajila. The remaining four villages are completely surrounded by the territory of Armenia, but Azerbaijan intends to demand their transfer.
Armenia agreed to transfer the border villages unilaterally. At the same time, at the request of the Armenian Foreign Ministry, 208 square kilometers of the Armenian territory in the 31st settlement are also under the control of Azerbaijan. Including, Azerbaijan occupies 8 square kilometers of arable land in Berkaber.
In the region where disputed villages are located, Russian troops have been present since 2021. At the same time, from the Nagorno -Karabakh, where the Russian peacekeeping contingent has been since 2020, Russian troops began to leave on April 17.
Aliyev regularly makes less specific claims on most of Armenia. Despite the fact that Azerbaijan and Armenia in 2022 agreed to recognize the Soviet borders of each other from 1991, Aliyev protests against the use of late Soviet maps for this. He claims that before his father, Heydar Aliyev, came to power in Soviet Azerbaijan, the country regularly “gave” Armenia part of the territories.
