One of Harvey Weinstein's convictions has been overturned. 'Egregious errors' found in trial

A New York appeals court has overturned Hollywood producer Harvey Weinstein's 2020 sex crimes conviction. BBC News reports this.

The decision states that the sentence was imposed without due process of law. The appeals court explained that prosecutors called witnesses whose testimony was not relevant to the case.

In addition, according to the appeals court, the judge hearing the case against Weinstein erred by cross-examining the producer in a way that cast him in a “grossly biased” light.

“The remedy for these egregious errors is a new trial,” the decision states.

• In March 2020, a court in New York sentenced Harvey Weinstein to 23 years in prison, finding him guilty of sexual crimes. He was found guilty of raping stylist Jessica Mann and forcing oral sex on assistant Miriam Haleyi.
• Despite the appeals court's decision, Weinstein will remain in prison, as in 2022 a court in Los Angeles found the producer guilty of rape and two counts of sexual assault committed in 2013 against a former Russian-born model whose name has not been disclosed. He was sentenced to 16 years in prison.
