At the Diehl Metal Applications metallurgical plant, a large fire occurred in the west of Berlin, Bild and Berliner Zeitung reported. Because of this, part of the city was covered with toxic smoke.
The representative of the fire service Berlin Adrian Venzel told Bild that chemicals were burning in the building. “There was stored sulfuric acid and copper cyanide. There is a risk of the formation of cyanide hydrogen, which can climb into the air with smoke, ”he said.
Wenzel recommended that residents of the territory adjacent to the plant close the doors and windows, as well as turn off the ventilation and air conditioners.

Berlin authorities recommended avoiding the Lichterfelde area where the enterprise is located. Students and teachers of neighboring schools were sent home, and the shops located nearby were closed. What caused the fire is not reported. According to Bild, there are no victims.
According to Berliner Zeitung, the fire area is 2000 square meters. About 160 firefighters take part in the extinguishing of fire. Initially, the fire occurred on the ground floor of the plant, and then spread to the upper floors. Part of the building collapsed.
Diehl Metal Application also produces copper alloys, radiators, synchronizer rings for cars and metal -plastic hybrid parts. As Berliner Zeitung notes, at the address of the burning factory there is also a branch of Diehl Defense - a company that produces weapons. Judging by the map on Diehl, in Berlin there is only the Diehl Defense office, and its production is located in the south of the country - near Nuremberg.
