Russian students arrested in Finland for exporting electronics

In the Finnish city of Kajaani, three Russian students were arrested on suspicion of exporting dual-use goods abroad. This was reported by Yle.

According to investigator Kimmo Tuulenkari, these are luxury items that can be used not only for civilian purposes, but also for military purposes, both on their own and in parts.

“If we talk about luxury goods in general, we are talking about smartphones, computers, computer parts, cameras, drones and other things that people usually use in everyday life, but which may have a dual purpose in another country,” Tuulencari said .

Local police note that goods exported from Finland are in demand in the country or countries where they were sent.

According to Yle, police detained the suspects after a search of a local college dormitory. All the defendants in this case - two young men and a girl - are students of this institution. Their ages are not known, but it is known that they are all over 20 years old and have Russian citizenship. According to the prosecutor, the citizenship of the suspects does not affect the course of the investigation, but the “international aspect” of the case complicates the investigation.

Yle notes that those detained face up to four years in prison. The Russian embassy in Finland demanded that its employees be given access to the detainees. “All requests from the embassy in this regard, in violation of the provisions of the bilateral consular convention, remain unanswered,” RBC quotes a representative of the diplomatic mission.
