Sadiq Khan has been elected Mayor of London for the third time. No one had previously led the British capital for three consecutive terms.

The current mayor of London, representative of the opposition Labor Party in Great Britain, Sadiq Khan, was re-elected to this position and will occupy it for the third time. This is reported by The Guardian with reference to the results of regional elections in England, which took place on May 2.

The Telegraph clarifies that Khan received 43.9% of the vote, and his rival, representative of the ruling Conservative Party Susan Hall - 32.7%.

Turnout in the election was 40.5%, which is 1.5% lower than in 2021.

Sadiq Khan has become the first mayor of London to lead the city for the third time.

The BBC Russian service notes that as a result of local elections held in England, Labor significantly strengthened its position, and the Conservatives lost many seats in local councils.

• The position of Mayor of London was created in 2000. Until 2008, the city was led by Ken Livingstone, from 2008 to 2016 - Boris Johnson. Until the mid-1980s, London was governed by a city council, then, by decision of Margaret Thatcher's government, the council was abolished, and its functions were transferred to government organizations and various district councils.
