The US will develop an “air Pentagon”

The American company Sierra Nevada Corporation bought five Boeing 747 passenger aircraft from the South Korean carrier Korean Air to make them a new generation of “doomsday planes”. CNN reports this.

Sierra Nevada is the replacement contractor for the current U.S. Air Force Command and Control strategic aircraft fleet. According to the TV channel, a company representative confirmed the purchase of Korean Air aircraft, but did not provide any details.

At the same time, according to CNN, on April 26, the US Air Force awarded the company a contract worth $13 million, according to which Sierra Nevada must develop and produce new “doomsday planes.” CNN, citing the US Department of Defense, clarifies that aircraft must withstand the effects of an electromagnetic pulse - a burst of energy released by a nuclear explosion. Work on the project is planned to be completed by 2036.

The Doomsday Planes are intended to serve as command and control centers for the U.S. military in the event of an emergency, including nuclear war, that could result in command posts on the ground being destroyed or rendered inoperable.

According to CNN, at least one “doomsday plane” is currently on constant alert. According to the TV channel, South Korean Boeings should replace the outdated and less capacious aircraft of the current “doomsday” fleet, which entered service with the Air Force back in the 1980s.

CNN notes that the new planes could become "something like the Pentagon in the sky" and carry more than a hundred people, including the US President and Secretary of Defense, who could control US military forces around the world from the air.
