Switzerland won Eurovision 2024
The representative of Switzerland, rapper Nemo (Nemo Mettler), won the Eurovision Song Contest 2024 with the song The Code.
Based on the jury voting results, Switzerland scored 365 points. The audience vote brought her another 236 points. The total amount was thus 591 points.
Nemos identify as non-binary and ask to use the pronoun “they” when referring to themselves. The song "The Code" talks about the experience of embracing one's identity and being non-binary.
Croatia took second place in the competition. Her representative Baby Lasagna (real name Marko Purisic) with the song Rim Tim Tagi Dim scored 547 points based on voting by the jury and viewers.
In third place are representatives of Ukraine Jerry Heil and Alyona Alyona (Yana Shemaeva and Alena Savranenko) with the song Teresa & Maria. They scored 453 points: 146 based on the jury vote and 307 based on the audience vote.
Israeli Eden Golan took fifth place with the song Hurricane. According to the results of the jury's voting, Golan received 52 points. The audience vote brought her another 323 points, for a total of 375 points.
- The Eurovision final took place in Malmo, Sweden. 25 countries took part - shortly before the performance, the representative of the Netherlands, Joost Klein, was removed by the organizers due to a complaint of “inappropriate behavior”. Russia has not participated in Eurovision since 2021 - after the outbreak of a full-scale war in February 2022, the European Broadcasting Union suspended it from the competition.
- The participation of the Israeli representative in the competition was accompanied by protests. During the semi-final, several thousand people in Malmö attended a pro-Palestinian rally. On the day of the Eurovision final, law enforcement officers detained activist Greta Thunberg, who spoke out against Israel’s participation and protested near the Malmö Arena stadium. During Eden Golan's performance, she was booed in the audience. Those jury members who gave points to Israel during the voting were also booed.
