“The key is with a man who is not there. Shelters in other houses are flooded. There's nowhere to hide"

In the basement of house 55a on Shchorsa Street in Belgorod, where the entrance collapsed on the morning of May 12, there is a shelter from shelling. This is evidenced by data from the Yandex interactive map. The presence of the shelter was also confirmed by local residents with whom Verstka was able to talk. However, the entrance to the basement of the destroyed house could have been closed.

“The shelter was locked and locked. All the time. Some person who is never there has the key. Basement shelters in other houses are flooded. There is nowhere to hide. The only thing that works is the entrances with signs that say about the shelling, they are open. But there are no shelters here,” local resident Artem, who lives in a neighboring residential building, told Vorstka.
Another interlocutor, a resident of the neighboring house, Maxim, said that sometimes shelters in the area work, but local residents do not hide in them.

“If only they [the shelters] were still open, and because you’re lucky, sometimes the basement is open, sometimes not. Yes, no one goes to open shelters, everyone is already used to it.”
