Poland will strengthen the border with Belarus

The Polish authorities intend to allocate about $370 million to modernize the fence built on the border with Belarus. This was reported by the Polish Press Agency.

Polish Deputy Minister of National Defense Cezary Tomczyk said in an interview with TVN24 that the wall built in 2022 on the border between Poland and Belarus was only a “temporary measure.” According to him, today people from Belarus are able to easily overcome the barrier.

Tomczyk did not specify how exactly the wall would be modernized. According to him, engineers and employees of the Silesian University of Technology will work on the project. Their task is to make the barrier “impassable.” Now the wall is a fence 5.5 meters high and 186 kilometers long with barbed wire on top.

Tomczyk believes that the Polish authorities are “fighting a huge threat from Belarus,” so the country cannot afford for “the barrier protecting the borders to be a fiction.” The official noted that the “second element” of modernization could be bunkers and trenches, but he did not provide details.

The deputy minister recalled that the Polish authorities act within the framework of international law. He stressed that if border officials catch someone trying to cross the border illegally, they will be sent back. “That’s how Polish law works, and there’s nothing wrong with that,” Tomczyk added. He also stressed that the problem of migrants “does not have military implications.”

The decision to modernize the wall was made in February 2024. Six months earlier, Polish residents voted against the demolition of the fence.
