Boris Kovalchuk, the son of a friend of Vladimir Putin, became the new head of the Accounts Chamber.

At a meeting on May 14, the Federation Council appointed Boris Kovalchuk as head of the Accounts Chamber of Russia.

Kovalchuk’s candidacy was submitted to the Federation Council by Russian President Vladimir Putin two days earlier.

How candidates are selected

In accordance with the law, the Federation Council offers the president a choice of three candidates for the post of head of the Accounts Chamber. The President selects one of them, after which he sends it back to the Federation Council for final approval.

In addition to Kovalchuk, the other two candidates proposed by the Federation Council to Putin were Anatoly Artamonov, a senator from the Kaluga region, and Galina Izotova, the acting head of the Accounts Chamber since 2020.

• Boris Kovalchuk has been deputy head of the control department of the President of the Russian Federation since March. Before that, for several years he headed the energy company Inter RAO.
