The FSB was asked to check the Central Election Commission for extremism

Moscow municipal deputy Pavel Ivanov accused the Central Election Commission of demonstrating extremist symbols. He turned to the head of the FSB, Alexander Bortnikov, with a request to conduct an investigation. The deputy published the letter on his VKontakte page. The service has not yet responded to this request.

“On May 15, 2024, the Central Election Commission of the Russian Federation presented the logo of the “Unified Voting Day 2024”, on the right side of which there is a symbol that is indistinguishably similar to the symbol of the extremist organization “Navalny Headquarters”,” the deputy’s appeal says.

Ivanov added that he considers the actions of the Central Election Commission employees “a betrayal of the motherland.” He also called for the logo presented by the Central Election Commission to be recognized as an extremist symbol, banned on Russian territory, and also to be checked by the commission “in order to identify anti-people elements.”

“Taking into account the above, the extremist symbols chosen as the logo of the upcoming election campaign undermine the authority of the current government and provoke citizens to commit illegal acts in the interests of the extremist organization Navalny Headquarters, which is contrary to the interests of the Russian Federation and society,” the letter to Bortnikov says.

The election logo unveiled yesterday features the red exclamation point that politician Alexei Navalny used in his 2018 election campaign. In addition, the same sign is on the emblem of the Smart Voting project.
