On May 2, the 2nd Western District Military Court received a case on the dissemination of military "fakes" motivated by political or ideological hatred (paragraph "d" of Part 2 of Article 207.3 of the Criminal Code) and assistance to terrorist activity (Part 1 of Article 205.1 of the Criminal Code) against Vitaliy Yarema. OVD-Info drew attention to the card.
It is unknown why a case could have been brought against him.
Probably, we are talking about the Ukrainian politician and lawyer Vitaliy Yarema. The patronymic indicated in the case card coincides with the patronymic of the politician. In February, Rosfinmonitoring added his full namesake to the "register of terrorists and extremists". The data on the place and date of birth of the defendant indicated by the agency also coincides with similar information about the man.
Vitaliy Yarema was a member of the Verkhovna Rada from 2012 to 2014, and in 2014–2015, he was the Prosecutor General and First Deputy Prime Minister of Ukraine. In December 2023, the Investigative Committee reported that the man had been charged in absentia. The agency did not specify under what article.
- After the war in Ukraine began, the Russian authorities began to react sharply to anti-war statements. The list of articles under which those speaking out against the war are prosecuted is quite broad. The defendants in "anti-war cases" are often charged with hooliganism, vandalism, violence against government officials, and other violations. Articles introduced into the Criminal Code after the start of military action also became a significant element of pressure - the dissemination of "fakes" about the Russian army and discrediting the armed forces.
