Hague prosecutor requests arrest warrant for Netanyahu

The prosecutor of the International Criminal Court in The Hague (ICC) Karim Khan has requested an arrest warrant for Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, the court's website reported .

The prosecutor also requested an arrest warrant for Israeli Defense Minister Yoav Galant, saying he believes Netanyahu and Galant may be responsible for war crimes and crimes against humanity in the Gaza Strip.

Khan also demanded arrest warrants for three Hamas leaders, Mohammed Deif, Yahya Sinwar and Ismail Haniyeh, who are also suspected of war crimes and crimes against humanity in Gaza.

Earlier, The New York Times, citing Israeli officials, wrote that the ICC could bring charges against senior Israeli officials, including Netanyahu. The newspaper specified that the ICC could accuse the Israeli authorities of obstructing the delivery of humanitarian aid to Gaza and of a disproportionate military response to the Hamas attack. The publication noted that issuing arrest warrants would put Israel in a humiliating position on the international stage. In the country itself, according to the NYT, there were serious concerns about the issuance of arrest warrants.

The war between Israel and Hamas began on October 7, 2023. In response to the militant attack that killed about 1,200 people and took more than 250 hostage, Israel launched Operation Iron Swords. The Israeli army completely sealed off the Gaza Strip and sent troops in. It said it planned to completely destroy Hamas.

In Gaza, as a result of military actions, according to the Hamas-controlled Ministry of Health, about 35 thousand people died.
