The court arrested the former commander of the 58th Army of the Southern Military District Ivan Popov for two months, TASS said. Popov lost in July 2023 after the report to the command on the need for rotation in the troops. Popov became the third general in the Ministry of Defense after Timur Ivanov and Yuri Kuznetsov, against whom a criminal case was opened. Cases of Kuznetsov and Popov may indicate that after the arrest of Ivanov, the security forces began to pursue generals, whose possible involvement was not previously known for corruption.

Details. The first reports of Popov’s arrest appeared in the wireless channels “Military Inverse” and “Two Maigors” . An hour after them, the TASS State Agency and the Mash channel close to the security forces reported the arrest.

• Popov was accused of especially large -scale fraud, TASS reported with reference to the source. The agency did not lead other details.

• The general was accused of illegally selling two thousand tons of metal structures worth about 100 million rubles, which were intended for the construction of the defense line in the zone of it, wrote Mash. According to the channel, Popov, together with an entrepreneur from the Krasnodar Territory and an officer of the Southern Military District, sold several thousand tons of metal, which were purchased as part of assistance from the occupation authorities of the Zaporizhzhya region. The material was intended for the construction of engineering structures of the 58th Army, Mash said.

• The criminal case was instituted under part 4 of Article 159 of the Criminal Code of the Russian Federation (fraud organized by a group or on an especially large scale), the channels “Two Majors” and “Military Inverse” wrote.

• According to TASS, the preventive measure was considered in the 235th garrison military court.

Context. Popov until July 2023 commanded 58 army. He was removed from his post by the head of the General Staff Valery Gerasimov: he was dissatisfied with the report of the commander, in which he raised the issue of the need to rotate the units, wrote the channel of the Cheka-OGPU. Gerasimov accused Popov of panicism and self -disagreement, the channel writes. Later, Ivanova himself confirmed the detachment.

• After removal, he was sent to Syria, wrote Mash. According to the channel, after some time he was recalled back to interrogation in the fraud case, in which the subordinate Popov was initially suspected.

• Popov is one of the popular generals in the army. In 2020, he had an income of 2.4 million rubles, follows from these leaks.
