Hurricanes and tornadoes sweep across the US

At least 23 people have died and about 300,000 more have been left without power in seven US states due to thunderstorms and tornadoes, the BBC reports .

Forecasters say the storm has affected much of the country from Alabama to New York, with more thunderstorms, heavy rains, hurricane-force winds, hail and flooding expected in the coming days.

Thus, on May 28, according to the forecast of the National Weather Service (NWS), heavy rains will fall on the east coast of the United States, including parts of New York, Pennsylvania, New Jersey and Maryland. In turn, strong thunderstorms with wind gusts of 120 kilometers per hour or more are expected in Texas.

At the same time, heat waves have set in in the south of the country, with temperatures near record highs. About 120 million Americans live in areas where forecasters have warned of one or another type of bad weather.

On May 26, emergency services across the country received more than 600 reports of damage from hurricane-force winds in 20 states. In Indianapolis, about 125,000 spectators at the Indianapolis 500 auto race had to be evacuated, and the start of the race itself was delayed by four hours.

The storm killed eight people in Arkansas, seven in Texas, two in Oklahoma and five in Kentucky. In Alabama, a tree fell on the home of a 79-year-old woman, killing her. In Colorado, a lightning strike killed a farmer and 34 of his cows.
