Mexico to have first woman president

The ruling party's candidate, former Mexico City Mayor Claudia Sheinbaum, has won Mexico's presidential election. According to preliminary results from the local electoral commission, she is gaining between 58.3% and 60.7% of the vote, Reuters reports . Opposition candidate Xochitl Galvez conceded defeat after preliminary counts showed her gaining between 26.6% and 28.6%.

"For the first time in 200 years of the republic, a woman will be president, and she will be a reformer. Thank you to all Mexicans. Today, we demonstrated with our vote that we are a democratic people," Sheinbaum commented on her victory on the social network X.

In the elections, Sheinbaum ran for the center-left bloc Sigamos Haciendo Historia (Let's Continue Making History) and promised to follow the policies of the current President Andrés Manuel López Obrador. Unable to run for another term, he called on his supporters to vote for Sheinbaum. In her victory speech, she thanked the president for his support and called him "a unique person who has transformed the country for the better."

Sheinbaum has often been criticized for her “absolute loyalty” to Obrador, with opponents arguing that Sheinbaum is incapable of making decisions on her own, claims she calls “sexist and misogynistic.”

As Reuters notes, the election of a female president is a big step for this country in the fight for gender equality in Mexico, a country known for its widespread "macho cult."
